With nearly 200 colleges in the Georgia university system, the state has a lot to offer students: warm weather, affordable tuition, and a diverse selection of schools.

University of Georgia
Located in Athens, GA, The University of Georgia is the oldest public school in the United States. It’s also the largest college in Georgia with over 30,000 students.
Hailed as a “public ivy” — a public university that delivers academic education rivaling famous (and expensive) private ivy league schools — UGA is known for a host of rigorous academic programs. Among them is the journalism program at the school’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, which hands out the prestigious Peabody Awards.
Watching Georgia Bulldogs football is a favorite pastime in Athens, and participation in the Greek system is strong. Nearly 25 percent of UGA students are in a fraternity or sorority.

Georgia State University
Georgia State University is an urban research university located in downtown Atlanta. One of the biggest metro Atlanta universities, GSU has 30,000 students.
Traditionally a commuter college, Georgia State is known for accommodating adult learners and part time students, offering a wide selection of evening and weekend classes. Its evening law program was one of the first of its kind in the country and is consistently ranked among the best law programs for adults.

Georgia Institute of Technology
Known both for its football rivalry with the University of Georgia and strong engineering programs, Georgia Institute of Technology is another Atlanta college located in the heart of the city. Originally founded in 1885 to contribute to a new, industrialized Southern United States, the school has emphasized science and engineering programs since its inception but also has strong architecture, management, computing, and liberal arts programs.
Because of its roots as a trade school, Georgia Institute of Technology emphasizes the value of internships and cooperative education. The university encourages these real-world work experiences and offers a special five-year program that allows students to alternate semesters of full time study with full time employment.

Emory University
Emory University is one of several major research universities in the United States receiving over $400 million in annual research funds. Located in Atlanta’s Druid Hills area, Emory’s undergraduate student body is made up of about 7,000 students — the most ethnically and religiously diverse student body of any American research university.
While it has a reputation as a good private liberal arts school, Emory University is best known for its business, law, and medical graduate programs. Collaborating with the nearby Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and affiliated with the Emory Healthcare system — the largest healthcare provider in Georgia — Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health is one of the most noted medical schools in the country.

Spelman College
One of three metro Atlanta women’s colleges, Spelman College is a historically black liberal arts school. One of just a few historically black women’s colleges in the country, thousands of students apply to Spelman every year. But the school accepts only a small number, with 2,000 women making up the student body.
Spelman has produced many notable alumni including author Alice Walker and former Surgeon General Audrey F. Manley. The school has a reputation for producing high-achieving alumni with nearly half of Spelman grads going on to get graduate degrees.

Oglethorpe University
Oglethorpe University is a small, private liberal arts college in Atlanta. The school’s faculty has a commitment to teaching, not research, and the school emphasizes critical thinking about the changing global society. Oglethorpe University takes a unique approach to undergraduate education with its “Oglethorpe Idea” — a curriculum that requires students to concentrate on courses in “Human Understanding” and “Citizenship.”

Paying For College
If you’re a Georgia resident, attending college is very affordable thanks to the HOPE Scholarship. Funded by the state lottery, this scholarship covers full tuition, some student fees, and a book allowance at public Georgia universities. Students attending private Georgia universities don’t get left out either: they receive flat $3,500 grants annually. As long as you have good grades and stay out of trouble, you can go to college in Georgia without paying a lot.

In this day and age, it can be difficult to find time to get to the gym and maintain a healthy exercise regimen. And it can be challenging trying to fit exercise equipment in the limited space in your apartment. However, there are many ways you can get a workout in your apartment. Exercise videos
Made big during the 80s, exercise videos are a great way to get a structured exercise routine going. Today, workout options available have gone far beyond the Jane Fonda workout. In Dance Dance Revolution, a player must move his or her feet to a set pattern, stepping in time to the general rhythm or beat of a song. The more steps you hit, the higher your score, and generally the more intense your workout. Playing this game can result in some serious exercise if done for extended periods.

Move it and lose it
When you’re home, just remember to keep moving. Stand in the doorway and do leg kicks while dinner’s cooking, or stretch and do crunches/leg lifts/handweights in reps during commercials on TV. Buy some dance music and dance around your apartment. Anything that gets the heart rate up will burn calories.

Congratulations! All (or at least some) of the boxes are unpacked, the utilities are turned on, and you’re settled into your new place. Now you want to take advantage of living in an apartment: all those new neighbors who could become potential friends. The trick is getting to know them in a way that keeps them, and you, comfortable. Here are some tips for turning strangers into conversation partners and making your apartment community your friendly neighborhood.

Say hi
First, go ahead and say hello. This is especially true for your immediate neighbors when you first move in — they’ll see all the boxes going back and forth, and naturally be curious. You can keep the chat light and simple; try asking for the recommendations as to the nearest grocery store, dry cleaners, or place to get good furniture cheaply. (Another advantage of this approach is that you get to talk to your neighbors before you have to bang on their door to get them to turn their music down — or they on yours.)

Apartment community events
Another possibility in many larger apartment communities is to meet people at community-sponsored gatherings. If your community has a weekly social hour or hosts a Saturday morning brunch, you get the benefit of both free food and an opportunity to socialize.

Use your amenities
Taking advantage of the common facilities — the pool, the exercise room, the laundry room — will also put you in contact with your neighbors. Top Kitchen Safety Tips

Keep small appliances unplugged
If you start to clean an appliance like your food processor or can opener, for instance, and accidentally hit a button you won’t be in danger of losing a finger — only if it’s unplugged. Likewise, curious children (and pets) are less likely to be injured when they poke around.

Turn pot handles away from yourself
Pot handles that jut out over the edge of the stove are a kitchen safety hazard. Avoid dangerous spills and burns by turning pot handles away from yourself when you cook — either towards the back of the stove or towards the kitchen counters.

Use potholders
Don’t try to pick up a hot pot or cookie sheet without potholders — that’s the quickest way to get a nasty burn. And when you aren’t using your potholders, keep them away from open flames.

Kitchen safety and food contamination:

Disinfect regularly:
Dirty kitchen surfaces and utensils are a big kitchen safety hazard. Regularly disinfect surfaces like refrigerator shelves, kitchen counters, and kitchen cabinets to keep stored food safe. And wash your utensils in warm, soapy water. Don’t forget about cutting boards, a common bacteria breeding ground. Disinfect boards regularly with diluted bleach solution and replace them when they are worn.

Wash your hands before and during food prep:

Store knives away from children:
Drawers or magnetic strips far from the reach of small arms are the best knife storage options.

Tune it up
Breaking down in the summer is no fun, but having car trouble in seriously low winter temperatures puts a whole new element in the picture: namely, the weather! Be sure to have any nagging problems, such as occasional stalling, taken care of now. Also have routine car maintenance performed to check and correct:

Pet-Proofing Your Apartment

Dogs and cats, like young children, require their caretakers to take safety precautions in their home. Just as you would want to avoid having your child eat or play with something harmful, you will want to take these basic steps to keep your pets healthy and happy.

Kitchen
The kitchen is loaded with temptation and potential problems for your pet. Make sure all cupboards and cabinets are latched and that all chemicals, cleaners, laundry products and insect products are high and out of reach.

Some pets even like to pry into the refrigerator, so if yours is extra curious, consider a child-proof latch for that too. Garbage cans should be covered or put into a latched cabinet. There are plenty of dangers in that “delicious” smelling trash, such as food wrappers.

Seemingly innocent food items could prove harmful to your pet as well. Make sure that the “treat” you’d like to indulge your cat or dog with does not contain chocolate, bones, high fat or alcohol. Onions, grapes and raisins can all cause digestive problems for furry friends. Even things you wouldn’t imagine a pet would want to taste such as tobacco products, coins and many household plants could all find their way into your dog or cat’s stomach, causing poisoning or choking.

Living areas
Make sure that there are no dangling power cords to lamps, televisions, DVD players, computers or other electrical items that your pet could run across or pull down and that all children’s toys, batteries, craft items and knick knacks are put away and out of reach of a pet that could knock them over or chew on them. Be vigilant about leaving shoes and clothes on the floor as well, especially around teething pets — buttons and drawstrings can spell disaster if ingested.

Bathrooms
Just as you would secure all medications from your child, make sure that no medicines, animal or human, are within your dog or cat’s reach. Also make sure toilets are covered to prevent drowning or drinking of harmful chemicals.

Laundry, storage and other areas
Be cautious about using any kind of chemical or insecticide in areas your pet might access, reading all labels carefully to make sure such products are not harmful to them. As elsewhere in your home, be sure to store all cleaners, soaps and chemicals safely out of reach.

Check your dryer for kittens before using and bang the hood of your car before starting to make certain there aren’t any cats (yours or a neighbors) who’ve taken shelter there for warmth. You’d be amazed at what lengths felines will go to for a snug sleep.

Special gatherings
As wonderful as having guests over can be, get-togethers at your home can also create opportunities for your pet to get into trouble. Be sure to ask guests not to feed your pets from the table and monitor discarded plates to see that the food makes it to a sealed garbage can before your dog or cat can intercept it. Also be aware of who is coming in and out of front or back doors and where your pets are, so that your dog or cat doesn’t take off unattended.

Holiday plants such as mistletoe and holly are bad for your pet if ingested, as is the water from a live Christmas tree. Tinsel, ornaments and practically anything you hang on a Christmas tree can create dangerous temptation for your pet, so if yours is especially curious or drawn to bright and shiny objects, you might want to consider keeping the tree behind a closed door.

Having a pet is a lot like having a child and requires, especially in regard to safety, the same kind of planning and precautions. Don’t assume your dog or cat knows what’s good for them to eat or safe to play with. You’re the parent to your furry family member so make sure to act like one!

Most apartment buildings will have certain security provisions, including lighted hallways and gate codes. But you can also take steps to feel safe once you’re inside. Here are some tips for improving security while living in an apartment.

Protective measures
First, there are some common sense things you can do: don’t broadcast when you’re not in the apartment — that means no leaving notes for delivery men or friends on your front door when you’re in another part of the building or running errands. Don’t hesitate to call and check in with your landlord if a maintenance person shows up without your prior knowledge. Renter’s insurance is relatively cheap (you might be able to bundle it with your car insurance) and will give you some peace of mind if you’re ever burgled. Door Locks

In kindergarten we were taught sharing is good, but no one wants to share cold and flu germs. Here are a few simple things you can do to help reduce the chances of receiving an unhealthy gift this year.

Use common sense.
One of the best ways to avoid catching a cold is to steer clear of someone who has one. Many people suffering the effects of a cold are thoughtful enough or feel ill enough to limit social interaction, but some are not. If you have a coworker or friend showing all the symptoms — cough, runny nose, congestion and a scratchy throat — politely avoid them, especially during the first few days when they may be most infectious.

Hand washing.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), washing your hands is the single most important way of stopping the spread of viral and bacterial infections. Always wash your hands after touching someone who has a cold or touching something they’ve touched, like a doorknob, telephone, pen or keyboard.

Also wash your hands after blowing your nose or that of your young child. If your child has a cold, it’s a good idea to wash their toys after play.

And look out for that bathroom towel! If you or someone in your family has a cold, put up a separate towel in the bathroom for the healthy members to use. Take care of yourself.

We know we should all be considerate and stay away from others when we are sick, but daily obligations often make that hard. If, despite your best efforts, you caught a cold and have to be around other people, be conscious of keeping your germs to yourself.

Though we’ve been taught from childhood to cover our mouths when we cough or sneeze, it’s actually better to grab a tissue (which should immediately be thrown away) or turn away and cough or sneeze into the air. Otherwise, you are simply spreading germs into your own hands.

There is no certain way to prevent a cold from following you home this season, but there are some smart habits that can help you avoid one. Be aware, stay healthy and odds are good that you can avoid a germy gift that keeps on giving.

When winter weather hits and the temperature starts to drop outside, the temperatures can drop inside as well. Use these tips to prepare for your apartment for winter and you will be able to protect yourself and your apartment from the chill.

Before you make any major changes to your apartment, however, read your lease and talk to your apartment property manager to manager to make sure you are not breaking any apartment community regulations.

Reverse ceiling fansRunning your ceiling fan in reverse in your apartment can keep you more comfortable in winter weather. Since hot air rises, your ceiling fan can push that warmer air back down onto you. Just flip the switch on your ceiling fan. If it’s in reverse, you’ll see the blades going counterclockwise when you look up at it.

Help your heating systemAn efficient heating system will cost you less. As you prepare for winter, your HVAC system should be inspected by a pro to ensure it’s running smoothly. Apartment management should take care of this inspection, having ductwork cleaned and filters replaced.

You can also help your heating system to work more efficiently by wrapping your hot water heater in a special blanket. Available at home improvement stores, hot water heater blankets run about $15 and insulate a heater to be more efficient — that’s a pretty big deal considering that nearly 14 percent of your energy costs go towards providing hot water.

Winterize the fireplaceThe fireplace should be number one on the list of places to check when you prepare for winter. If you don’t plan on using your apartment fireplace, make sure the damper (a piece of metal that keeps out cold air) is closed and install a fireplace draft stopper.

But if you do plan on using the fireplace to keep winter temperatures at bay, be sure to have the fireplace inspected first. Turning the thermostat down and cranking up a warm fire can save you big bucks on heating bills — as long as your ventilation system is working properly. Talk with your apartment manager about their procedures for getting the fireplace inspected.

Prep for zone heating. Think about where you spend the most time in your apartment, and purchase heaters to keep those areas comfortable. Those zone heating gadgets could include an electric blanket, a space heater, or a towel warmer — any device that allows you to use heat as you need it, where you need it instead of wasting energy to warm your whole apartment.

Close off infrequently used areas. Why should your laundry room have to be as toasty as your living room? Keep infrequently used rooms and closets closed off during winter weather so that your space heaters can work more efficiently.

Insulate windows for around $15, a window insulation kit uses shrink-wrap plastic sheeting to seal off drafts. The investment could end up saving you money during the cold winter. If your windows are older, consider getting heavy curtains. Just adding heavy drapery around your windows also cuts heating costs.

Have maintenance plug up gaps. Windows aren’t the only drafty places in your pad. Check for cracks and gaps outside your apartment near windows and inside by outlets and doors. Call maintenance and have them use caulk to plug up these leaks. You can also purchase door draft stoppers to stop cold air from seeping in through cracks.

Set the thermostat if you’ve got a programmable thermostat, prepare for winter by setting it to heat your home only during the hours you’re there. It’s much cheaper to turn the thermostat down during the day when you’re at work and back up when you get home rather than keeping your apartment warm 24/7.

Turning the thermostat down just three degrees can save you money. That’s why utility companies recommend setting your thermostat to 68 degrees. Even if you don’t have a programmable thermostat, you can still save money by adjusting your thermostat manually each day.

Check smoke detectors when you prepare for winter. While you’re at it, make sure you fire extinguisher still works too. Winter weather brings a lot of indoor fire hazards, so checking these devices now is a good idea.

Winterize yourself when it’s cold outside, dress appropriately for the weather. Get the right indoor garb for winter weather: sweat pants, slippers, warm pajamas, a blanket for the couch. Instead of turning up your thermostat, make yourself more comfortable with warm clothing.

How to Make the Perfect Gingerbread House For Christmas!

Christmas is nearly upon us and this little project is great fun for kids and grown-ups alike. It's relatively easy to make, it just takes a little bit of time and a little bit of sparkle.

Gingerbread
6 Cups of Plain Flour
½ Teaspoon of Baking Powder
4 Teaspoons of Ground Ginger
4 Teaspoons of Ground Cinnamon
½ Teaspoon of Salt
½ Teaspoon of Allspice
2 Eggs
1 Cup of Dark Molasses
1 Tablespoon of Water
12 Tablespoons of Butter
1 and a ½ Cups of Light Brown Sugar

Icing
2 Egg Whites
2 and 2/3 Cups of Powdered Sugar
Sweets of your Choice for the Decoration
Preheat oven to 170 degrees C

How to Make the Gingerbread
1. Whisk the dry ingredients together
2. Add in the butter and sugar and whisk until fluffy
3. Beat in the water, eggs and molasses
4. Beat in the flour bit by bit and knead once it's all in there
5. Add more flour if needed
6. Refrigerate the dough overnight
7. Measure out a front and back panel of the same size out of cardboard. These will need to have a point in the middle to create an apex with the 2 roof panels which are also the same size. Make 2 shorter sides of cardboard for the side panels.
8. Cut out these cardboard panels and lay them on top of the gingerbread dough. Cut out the various panels and lay on buttered greaseproof paper.
9. Place in the centre of the oven making sure there is plenty of room all around your gingerbread pieces in case they spread.
10. Cook for around 6 minutes and remove small side panels or until they brown around the edges
11. Cook for a further 7-9 minutes and take out larger pieces when they start to brown around the edges
12. Lay the templates over the corresponding pieces and cut off any overhanging bits that have spread in the oven.
13. Peel off the greaseproof paper and leave to cool
14. While you're waiting for the biscuits to cool make your icing. This will bind the walls and roof together.
15. Arrange one of the short walls next to an apexed wall and stick edges together with icing. Stick other short wall on other side of apexed wall and bind with more icing then find the last remaining wall to the back. Leave to completely harden.
16. Once the walls are arranged and fixed, you can begin to construct the roof. For an added surprise, you could fill the house with various sweets before you stick the roof onto the mini construction. Put icing all along the top edges of the walls and arrange the two roof panels together and bind with icing. Leave to dry completely. If any pieces crack or break completely- don't worry as you can simply use the icing to bind back together. It will give the house an antique look!
17. Now for the fun part! It's time to decorate! Get your fudge and stick together with icing in a brickwork pattern. This will make your chimney and this can be laid against the back of the house.
18. You could stick chocolate buttons onto the top of the construction in an overlapping style to create tiles. This looks particularly lovely with both milk and white chocolate buttons.
19. Decorate and place on a cake board. Cover the bottom of the board with more icing for a snowy affect and place fudge around the edge of the board to create a brick wall!

Pumpkin Cheesecake recipe!

Do you have a sweet tooth & are looking to satisfy that craving? You must make this pumpkin cheesecake to serve at one of your holiday functions. It's to die for!

Ingredients
Cake
1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix
1 egg
1/2 cup butter
Filling
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin
3 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup butter
4 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg

Directions
1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
2) To make the cake, stir the cake mix together with 1 egg and 1/2 cup butter in a mixing bowl until well blended. Pat the mixture evenly onto the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
3) To make the filling, beat the cream cheese and pumpkin together in a mixing bowl until smooth. Beat in the eggs, vanilla, and 1/2 cup butter until creamy and smooth. Gradually stir in the confectioners' sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until evenly blended. Spread the pumpkin mixture over the cake layer.
4) Bake in preheated oven until top is set, 40 to 50 minutes. Cool, and cut into squares to serve.
